The room had a funky smell, and it was a very dusty room. Even on the lamps there was this thick layer of dust (see picture) which probably contributed to the funky smell, together with a lack of ventilation and a small window it can get smelly. There were also no curtains which is a very big down side. The common area was great and always populated, you could easily chill with people and make a conversation. The place also makes their own food, and the croissant is probably one of the best croissants I’ve had in Italy. Too bad they also have a rule which doesn’t allow taking foods from outside into the common area, but it’s not like they were enforcing that rule.
The lobby is the best part of this hostel, for sure. Lots of fun activities, plenty of space, and well-maintained. However, the rooms leave a lot to be desired in terms of comfort, service (beds weren't made for incoming guests), and cleanliness. The reason I gave the Rooms portion a 2 instead of a 3 is actually because of the bathrooms -- mold, mold, EVERYWHERE. The showers were a horror show. I'm not sure if this is a matter of prioritization, but the women's showers on my floor weren't like this, but the men's were (see pictures). Management/Ownership: do better.
I recently stayed here and my experience was very good. The location of the hostel is good, you are close to the center (one stop of vaporetto to San Marco) and it's not too crowded. I liked that the zone is chill and you can get nice views staying just in the outside tables of the hostel. The room i had was kind of big with almost 20 people. In general was ok, the bed and the place to store your things. The beds doesn't have a courtins and maybe the bed are a bit close, but it's fine. As other comments say's the bathroom may seem the worst problem. I'll say that the only problem it's that in my floor was only one for a lot o people. That's way sometimes was not that clean, but i'll say that it's decent. People on the reception were nice.
Unfortunately, this hostel is completely useless for a short city trip to Venice. Summary: Impossible to leave luggage before 2pm, everything costs extra, no kitchen, staff not trying to help. The check-in is at 2pm, which is standard, however, they have only 30 lockers with a capacity of 250 guests, so naturally, they were all full. (Additionally, they cost extra!) The staff was unfortunately very unhelpful about this as well, especially the supervisor Sara told us that there was not a single room in the hostel that could be locked, the luggage couldn’t be left at the reception because they “can’t keep an eye on it”, even though the hostel claims to have 24/7 service. I have never seen any hotel or hostel where it was impossible to leave your luggage before check-in, and in my opinion that is just extremely poor service. On top, the reception claimed that they would ask to have the room cleaned early so we could check in at 12. The room was not ready at 12, we had to wait for hours, plus the early check-in also cost extra. This whole thing is especially problematic because the hostel is not very accessable from the city centre, so going out for a while with your luggage is super inconvenient (the boat is 9.50€ and takes 30 minutes). At least the hostel is directly at the sea. Another point about poor service is that the hostel does not have a guest kitchen, and it is not allowed to have your own food, so you are expected to pay extra for that as well. The rooms are okay and the beds were fine, but the only option for an all-female dorm was a 10-bed-dorm with one bathroom. In retrospect, I would definitely recommend getting a hostel in Mestre, it will probably take the same time to get to the city centre, plus save you from waiting all morning to leave your luggage somewhere.
This is the perfect budget hostel for first time solo travelers like myself. I really liked the location, as it is off the main islands so isn't quite as busy, but still has plenty of great restaurants nearby. It does mean you need to take the water busses to get in to the main part though. However, the rooms are really big and you just don't have much space to yourself. I recognize that the building is really old and small so there isn't much the staff can do, however the bathrooms are pretty terrible. Probably the worst out of the 8 or 9 hostels I have stayed in all around Europe. They are really cramped and there isnt anywhere to put your towel or clean/dirty clothes. Also, some of the shower doors have frosting that only covers from your thighs to you chest, so keep that in mind if it might bother you. The staff were pretty good, and the ground floor common space/bar is a highlight. It is super social and plenty of space and activities, meaning I really got to chatting with fellow young travelers. Would recommend if you are like me, but if you want to stay a little longer than 2 nights consider splurging on accomadation in the main islands thats a little nicer.
