With an expert guide on board, the city's layered history unfolds across every canal and island the boat passes.
From Riva degli Schiavoni, the boat drifts past the Doge's Palace, its pink-and-white Gothic façade glowing as the evening light drops across the lagoon. The bell tower of Piazza San Marco rises above the roofline, and to the east, the pale dome of San Giorgio Maggiore floats against the sky. The open water gives you a perspective on Venice's political heart that most visitors on foot never experience.
Next, the boat slips into a narrow canal threading through the Biennale Gardens, a route most gondolas never reach. Further along, you'll drift past a traditional gondola workshop where boats are still shaped and repaired by hand, then round into view of the Arsenale's fortified walls, once home to the largest naval operation in medieval Europe.
