Description
Set off to discover elegant Art Nouveau (Liberty-style) villas and Belle Époque icons such as Hotel Excelsior and Des Bains, evidence of the island’s golden age of tourism. On your bike, ride along the seafront and pass the key sites of the Venice Film Festival, where international stars walk the red carpet every year. Cycle along the beach until you reach the Murazzi, an imposing 18th-century structure made of Istrian stone that has protected the island from the force of the sea for centuries. Arrive in Malamocco, one of the oldest settlements in the lagoon and the historic seat of the dogado before power moved permanently to Rialto—a place where you can still sense a more primordial Venice. Then reach the WWF Alberoni Oasis, where you’ll get off your bike for a relaxing nature walk among dunes, pinewoods, and habitats rich in biodiversity. On the way back, admire the outlines of some of the most fascinating and mysterious islands of the southern lagoon: Poveglia, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, and Lazzaretto Vecchio.Includes
