The Venetian Ghetto was established on 29 March 1516 by decree of Doge Leonardo Loredan and the Venetian Senate as a segregated area for Jewish residents. The term 'ghetto' itself originates from this Venice district. By 1555, among Venice’s 160,208 inhabitants, there were 923 Jews who mainly worked as merchants. The Ghetto Vecchio and Ghetto Nuovo expanded between 1541 and 1633 to accommodate increasing Jewish immigration, though the total Jewish population in Italy remained under 25,000.
