Seafood Restaurants in Venice

If you’re in Venice and love seafood, you’re in for a treat. The city’s lagoon offers some of the freshest catches you can imagine. But don’t just chase the fancy spots around San Marco. Head to Cannaregio or even the lively Rialto Market early in the morning,you’ll find small trattorias where the fish is practically pulled straight from the water that day.

One of my favorite places is Osteria alle Testiere, a tiny spot close to Santa Maria Formosa where the crab and cuttlefish risotto never disappoints, especially in late spring. And if you’re here during winter, try the mołeche, the soft-shell crabs from the lagoon,Venetians go nuts for those. Just keep an eye out for the season because it’s not year-round.

Avoid restaurants right on the main tourist drag that serve frozen seafood dressed up fancy. Instead, find places with quick menus focused on what’s actual fresh. And a tip? Order ‘sarde in saor,’ a sweet and sour sardine appetizer; it’s a Venetian classic that often gets overlooked but tells the real story of local seafood cooking. Venice’s seafood scene can feel overwhelming, but once you get past the crowds, it’s pure pleasure.
